In the fullness of time our natural world has always shown itself through its resilience to have a way of balancing herself out. Restoring what has been lost and renewing what’s been damaged. It rarely does this in a straight line usually it shows in a haphazard way and this year’s Hurricane season is the rule although at first glance it may be perceived as the exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living in Florida and dealing with hurricanes for the better part of forty years it is hard to believe that this year 2026 is the first year since 1915 without (as of 9\/21) even one hurricane forming in the Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This natural occurrence is due to what is known as the EL Nino weather pattern. Originating in the Pacific El Nino causes the jet stream to move south causing warm Pacific sea water to be pushed toward the west coast of the U.S. The primary effect is the cause of more Pacific Typhoons & fewer Atlantic Hurricanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The El Nino affects trade winds causing upper level wind shear in the Atlantic making conditions in the Atlantic less favorable for development. This year the Atlantic also has had the added benefit which I like to call an insurance policy of dry air and sand from the Sahara desert spilling into the Atlantic before making its way across the ocean further dampening \ud83d\ude00 the chances for storm development. As with anything else in life these conditions are not a guarantee. The famous Hurricane Andrew of 1994 which struck Miami was able find a clear lane in which to travel before making landfall during an El Nino year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposite of El Nino is La Nina both of them were named by fishermen in the 1600’s who even then noticed the temperature changes in the water and its effects. La Nina acts as the polar opposite of EL Nino. During La Nina, patterns in the upper atmosphere is quieter in the Atlantic making conditions more favorable for development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not only the upper level atmosphere which has a weather effect. The currents in the ocean which act as highways transferring hot and cold energy and vital nutrients around and across our globe also play an vital role. As stated earlier our planet works in symmetry balancing out over time. And for this year I’ll take it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
