Today’s offshore minute is brought to you by Shell. No not the oil company but rather the leatherback turtle shell. Normally when we think of turtles we think of a slow deliberate lumbering creature on land. This picture depicts the route taken by a female leatherback sea turtle from her nesting area to her feeding area. A total of over 2,000 miles from Panama to the shores of the Gulf coast. We know it’s a female because once they are hatched from their eggs on the beach after they enter the water males never again leave the water. Unlike land turtles leatherback sea turtles use their shells ridges to help propel them through the water. They use their up to 9 foot long legs as giant flippers which allows them to reach speeds up to 22 mph. All while weighing up to 1,500 pounds. It took approximately six months for the turtle to make the trip. I’m not sure the shell oil company can provide that kind of gas mileage. Not even with their electric vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
