Sperm whales š are no different than other mammals. They need air to breathe and require sleep everyday. There are larger whale’s than the Sperm whale but it is the largest toothed predator on our planet. And it also has the largest brains of any creature on earth weighing approximately 20 lbs. There are other larger bodied whale’s known as Baleen whale’s which feed exclusively on krill & plankton which they filter through their bodies. I don’t know if the largest brains make the Sperm whale’s smarter that other whale’s but they do require less sleep. In the illustration the Sperm whale’s are shown sleeping which they do in a vertical position close to the water surface. What makes it so interesting is the fact that although they are sleeping a portion of their brain remains conscious so they can surface to breathe. Sperm whale’s do not require alot of sleep in fact they require less sleep than any other animal on our planet. They require about 7% of their existence in a sleep state. Followed closely by the giraffe which require about 8% of their time sleeping. So I guess it can be said that Sperm whale’s & giraffe’s sleeping habits run neck & neck. Sperm whale’s sleep in increments throughout the day and night. Although their big head and long mouth can look intimidating they are known to be friendly towards humans. Remember this when you put your head down on the pillow tonight.
