Check out the contours of the Gulf of Mexico. Those drop offs hold some of the most fertile fishing grounds in the world. They extend from the Western Florida panhandle to the Yucatan peninsula….the deepest part of the Gulf is called the sigsbee deep (13,000 ft.) in the south western end.

In the past year the Gulf of Mexico has produced a record blue marlin 1,145 lbs. & it’s largest ever bluefin tuna 888 lbs. although the tuna was disqualified as a record because more than one angler touched the rod. Leaving the current record of 826 lbs. from 2017 in tact. The west coast of Florida wasn’t as blessed with deep water. You can travel 100 miles off the coast of Naples & still be only in 50 ft. of water.

On page 50 of A Flicker in the Water you can read the story about the Florida record yellowtail snapper (10.8 lbs.) which was caught 98 miles west of Naples in 2016 shattering the previous record by 2 lbs. Come to think of it. Maybe that’s why they play so much golf!⛳
