Aftermath of Hurricane Erin

In the last post, I talked about the way fish are affected before and during a hurricane. In the most recent hurricane called Erin we can see how these affects can linger long after the storm has passed.

In Erin’s case she was so large and powerful in her wake she left a visible swath of cold water on the ocean surface.

She did this by churning up the deeper colder water deep below the surface while absorbing the warmth of the existing surface water taking it North with her.

In the picture below we can see she lowered the water temperature by 7 or 8 degrees. This affect may last several weeks before the Water warms up again.

Substantial in affecting sea life but more importantly if the next hurricane decides to take this same route it will be slowed and hopefully weakened considerably.
