Many years ago there was a hit song by the title of Love is in the air. But the story I am about to tell you shows that love can be just as mysterious underwater.
Come sail away with me was also a popular song only this story involves a real sailfish. Back in 2002 a fisherman in Ft. Lauderdale who was in the midst of an unfriendly divorce was fishing with two friends when they caught a sailfish. The fisherman wanting to clear the decks of his marriage (as a ritual) decided to slip his wedding ring down the bill of the sailfish letting it swim away never to be seen again. Or so he thought. Three years later now with a new girlfriend in his life. The same 3 fisherman set sail this time out of Miami for what they thought would be another ordinary fun filled day on the water. Little did they know when they left the dock that early morning what fate had waiting for them. Around noon they hooked a sailfish which is not uncommon in winter. What is uncommon as they were bringing the fish toward the boat there was a sparkle coming from the fish. Still not realizing what could be causing the fish to shine. The closer the fish came the brighter it got. Much to their astonishment when they brought the fish next to the boat it was the same exact fish they had caught three years earlier with the ring still attached to the bill. The fish had grown in the three year span with the bill expanding around the wedding ring. Making it unable to retrieve. The fisherman’s ex wife took it as a sign from heaven telling the former couple to bury the hatchet or maybe better yet come sail away with me.
P.S. For anyone who might be skeptical of such an incredible story. The fisherman easily passed a lie detector test. With the tale or in this case “bill” of his adventure making headlines everywhere in 2005.
